  • INDIANAPOLIS -- Connor Cook was determined to shake things up in the Big Ten title game. Zapatillas Baratas Imitacion . By the end of the night, the sophomore quarterbacks teammates were bouncing up and down right along with him. No. 10 Michigan State rallied from a seven-point third-quarter deficit by scoring the final 17 points Saturday night to upset No. 2 Ohio State 34-24 and deny the Buckeyes a chance to play for the BCS national championship. Cook and the Spartans were more than happy to oblige. "I think we heard people talk bad about us all year. This wasnt the first week where we heard people say negative things about us as an offence or as a football team, Cook said after throwing a 9-yard TD pass with 11:41 left to give the Spartans a 27-24 lead. "I think we were underdogs in the majority of the games we played this year. It really didnt affect us." But the Spartans big win may prove costly in the leagues bigger picture. A win would have made No. 2 Ohio State (12-1) a virtual lock to play in its fourth BCS title game, and there was speculation the Spartans (12-1) might go to Pasadena anyway for the Rose Bowl, regardless of Saturday nights result. Instead, the Spartans are still likely to book their first Rose Bowl trip since the 1987 season, while the Buckeyes must wait until Sunday night to find out which bowl theyll play in -- and whether theyll play in a BCS game. Michigan States victory put Auburn, who the Buckeyes were rooting for last week against Alabama, in the title game against Florida State. To the Buckeyes, it was a deflating night. "You know its going to haunt all of us, I imagine, for a little while," Meyer said. "But thats part of the game." It was a game that almost defied logic. Ohio State came into the game with the nations longest winning streak (24), had not lost under Meyer in two seasons and had one of the nations most productive offences and underrated defences. Michigan State turned the conventional wisdom upside down by scoring the first 17 points. Then the nations stingiest defence gave up the next 24 points as Braxton Miller, Carlos Hyde & Co. took command. Cook responded to the challenge by driving the Spartans for a field goal, hooking up with the wide open Josiah Price in the flat of the end zone and then burned 3 1/2 critical minutes on the clinching drive, capped by Jeremy Langfords sealing 26-yard TD run. Cook finished 24 of 40 for a career-high 304 yards and three scores. Langford ran 24 times for 128 yards, becoming the first player this season to top 100 yards against the Buckeyes this season. For Michigan State, it was a milestone night. It won its 12th game for the first time in school history, completed a perfect conference season and extended its own winning streak to nine -- something it had not done since starting 1966 at 9-0. Most important, the players got to hold the roses for the first time since 1987 and the celebration began even before the final seconds ticked off the clock. "Were going to live this one for a while, live it for a month," coach Mark Dantonio said. "But its important that we finish what we started and that will end with a bowl game." Miller did what he could to rally the Buckeyes, finishing 8 of 21 for 101 yards with one touchdown pass. He also ran 21 times for 142 yards and two scores, while Carlos Hyde ran 18 times for 118 yards. Both joined the Buckeyes 3,000-yard club, becoming the seventh and eight players of the schools exclusive group. Starting right guard Marcus Hall, who Meyer said would not start after last weeks fight at Michigan, did not play. Meyer said he made that decision earlier this week. But it was the stinging loss that really hurt. "Things happen in games, dont really go your way," Miller said. "Youve got to come back and fix the mistakes." The Buckeyes did that late in the first half when they closed to 17-10 at halftime. Miller opened the second half with an 8-yard TD run to tie and then gave Ohio State the 24-17 lead with a 6-yard run with 5:36 left in the third. Michigan State answered with Michael Geigers 44-yard field goal, which barely dropped over the crossbar, to make it 24-20 and Cook hooked up with a wide-open Price in the flat to make it 27-24 before Langford sealed it with his TD run with 2:16 left, which prompted Dantonio to lobby for the Spartans to be playing in the title game Jan. 6. "I can tell you this, we beat the No. 2 team.," Dantonio said. "Were 12-1 so why not us? Why not us? Ill vote us No. 2." Zapatillas Baratas España . The Jays officially parted way with Arencibia on Monday by declining to tender a contract offer to the fourth-year catcher. The move came after Anthopoulos signed Navarro to a two-year, US$8-million deal. "Dioner had a wonderful year last year in 240 at bats, and we think that theres some upside there, especially considering his age," the Blue Jays GM said on a conference call Tuesday. "We just think its a nice fit, and obviously well find out." Arencibia struggled through the worst season of career in 2013, with a .194 batting average, 21 home runs and 55 RBIs. The 27-year-old fan favourite, who began his Blue Jays career with so much promise -- homering on his first major-league pitch in 2010 -- struck out 148 times this past season, 15th most in Major League Baseball. Anthopoulos said he has no idea why Arencibia regressed so much last season. "I wish I did. I do think hes going to bounce back," Anthopoulos said. "He was a little banged up, and one thing about J.P., hes a very durable guy, very tough, plays through a lot of injuries. There was a time we almost put him on the (disabled list), he wanted to keep playing, he battled through it and grinded through it, and Ive seen him play with a broken hand and things like that. "But I really dont know, certainly we didnt expect him to have that type of year. .. Obviously hes very proud and has extreme pride in his job, and I think it may have just worn on him." Still, Anthopoulos said the decision to replace Arencibia wasnt made until the "last few weeks or so." The 29-year-old Navarro, a 10-year veteran from Venezuela, has served mostly as a backup but was an all-star with Tampa Bay in 2008. He hit .300 with a career-high 13 home runs in 89 games for the Chicago Cubs last season. He also had 34 runs batted in. "Navarro was someone who has pretty good contact rate, low strikeouts, prretty good on base skills, been able to take a walk and work the count," Anthopoulos said. Zapatillas Baratas. "From a game-calling standpoint, the work that we did on him, everyone really raved about his game-calling, and how guys love throwing to him." Anthopoulos said Navarro -- whos also played for the New York Yankees, Los Angeles, Cincinnati and the Chicago Cubs -- is keen to get return to a starting role in the majors. "The fact that Dioner has played over a hundred games three times in his career, has been an all-star and is only 29, that certainly factored into the decision," he said. "Dioner is very motivated and very hungry to get back to being that everyday guy, he just hasnt had an opportunity to be the everyday guy since he left the Rays." The GM said he called Arencibia on Sunday night to let him know his plans. Through his struggles on the field, the catcher became a lightning rod for criticism this past season when the Jays were failing to live up to lofty pre-season expectations. The catcher lashed out on Twitter at Sportsnet analysts Dirk Hayhurst and Gregg Zaun over their negative comments. He then deleted his Twitter account, posting in a final three-part tweet to his some 145,000 followers: "Its unfortunate to see how words are twisted to make false stories. "I give way too much of myself to have others try and make me out to (be) something/someone Im not." "I will no longer be on twitter," he said. "Thanks to all the fans who support and praying for the others that hate. God bless." Anthopoulos said in the "grand scheme of things," the fact Arencibia vented his frustration on Twitter wasnt a big deal, and said there were never any off-field issues with the former Jays catcher. "I think he was probably one of our best guys in the community, always was available, always was a great supporter of the ball club, any time we had a need in the off-season," Anthopoulos said. "Theres a lot of things he did behind the scenes that no-one saw so to me he was outstanding." ' ' '

  • MINNEAPOLIS -- The book on Target Field so far has been dimensions that favour the pitchers. Anthony Santander Jersey . Perhaps the sample size is too small. Kennys Vargas has only played one game there, after all. Vargas hit a three-run homer in his first home game for Minnesota, powering the Twins past Jesse Hahn and the San Diego Padres 3-1 on Tuesday night. "I think Im going to be good here," Vargas said. The 6-foot-5, 275-pound first baseman told manager Ron Gardenhire before the game he believes the ball carries well here, and it sure did when Hahn threw Vargas a 1-1 curveball with two outs in the sixth inning. That was the first home run allowed by Hahn in 55 2-3 innings, since he made his debut for the Padres on June 3. "Just a bad pitch. I wish I had it back," said Hahn (7-3) who went 5 2-3 innings with four walks, an outlier in an otherwise-stellar stretch since joining the rotation two months ago. The crowd of 34,495 roared for Vargas, who looks and swings like former Twins slugger David Oritz. He was recalled from Triple-A Rochester on Thursday. "I appreciate that. I play for the fans," the perpetually smiling Puerto Rican said. Vargas was so excited to swing, he took his bat to the outfield, instead of his glove, for shagging duty during early batting practice in the afternoon. Gardenhire was too amused by the rookies enthusiasm he could hardly scold him. "But that does tell you about what he likes to do," Gardenhire said. Phil Hughes had a season-high nine strikeouts in six innings to snap a three-start losing streak, and Glen Perkins earned his 28th save. The Padres, who came off a three-game sweep of Atlanta and had a National League-leading 78 runs entering the night since the All-Star break, left 11 men on base. Yonder Alonso, who has spent much of the summer on the disabled list, hit his first homer since June 7 but his drive to the upper deck in right field in the fifth inning was all the Padres put together against Hughes (11-8). "It happens. Weve just got to keep getting those guys on base," Alonso said. Hughes was removed after six innings and 99 pitches because of a cracked nail on his right index finger, a common side effect of his sharp curveball. "Take it easy on the bullpen days and use some super glue or whatever I have to do," Hughes said. "Usually its painful at the time, but it tends to grow out enough where its fine by my next start." SCHAFER SLIDES IN Jordan Schafer singled in his debut for the Twins on the first American League pitch he faced and stole second base before being thrown out when he overeagerly broke for third on Danny Santanas grounder to shortstop. Schafer, claimed off waivers from Atlanta, was in left field but will see plenty of time in centre, so the Twins can use Santana again at his natural shortstop position. The Twins have used six centre fielders this season, with former first-round draft pick Aaron Hicks, who was moved back up to Triple-A on Tuesday, unable to hold the job. TRAINERS ROOM Padres right-hander Andrew Cashner, on the disabled list with soreness in his right shoulder, will start a rehab assignment on Friday with Class A Lake Elsinore. Cashner has been limited by injuries to 12 starts this year. The Twins had their two highest-paid players, Joe Mauer and Ricky Nolasco who will make a combined $35 million this season, at Class A Cedar Rapids on Tuesday for rehab work. Mauer, out for more than a month with a strained muscle in his right side, went 1 for 3 as the designated hitter. Nolasco, coming back from a sore right elbow, threw 3 2-3 scoreless innings and will start again on Sunday. Mauer will likely rejoin the Twins at Houston next week. UP NEXT The Padres will give Odrisamer Despaigne (2-3, 2.68 ERA) his eighth career start in the finale of this two-game, 20-or-so-hour series. They are off on Thursday for the second time in four days, and Ian Kennedy will pitch the opener in Pittsburgh on Friday, followed by Eric Stults and Tyson Ross. The Twins will send Kevin Correia, who beat the Padres in San Diego in May, to the mound against his former team. They have yet to announce their starter for Saturday in Oakland, but recent acquisition Tommy Milone, who started on Tuesday for Triple-A Rochester, is a strong candidate for the spot. Cal Ripken Jr. Jersey . This was one of them. Omar Infante homered and tied a career high with six RBIs to carry the Kansas City Royals over the Baltimore Orioles 9-3 on Sunday. Pat Valaika Jersey . Now, he might be their hottest pitcher. Lobstein earned up his first major league victory Sunday night, allowing one run in 5 2-3 innings in the Tigers 6-1 win over the San Francisco Giants. https://www.cheaporioles.com/1398i-mike-bordick-jersey-orioles.html . Klopp replaced Rodgers as manager on October 8 2015 with the Reds sitting 10th in the table after winning just three of their opening eight Premier League games.Meanwhile, Rodgers had taken over in the summer of 2012 following the departure of previous boss Kenny Dalglish meaning that, unlike Klopp, the Northern Irishman had a whole pre-season in which to prepare for his first campaign on Merseyside. But how do the two coaches inaugural campaigns at Liverpool compare when broken down?Drawing a blank on debutRodgers Reds reign began disastrously with a 3-0 thumping at West Brom on August 18 2012, a loss not helped by Daniel Aggers second-half sending-off. Liverpool started the 2012/13 season with defeat to West Brom Klopps new players also failed to score in his first match at the helm, although at least Liverpool managed to avoid defeat after a creditable goalless draw at Tottenham.Tough baptism for RodgersRodgers faced Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United in three of his next four encounters, a trio of early-season fixtures that yielded just a solitary point from the first of those contests. Brendan Rodgers endured a tough start to life as Liverpool boss, including a 2-0 home loss to Arsenal in September 2012 In fact, it took Rodgers until his sixth game to record his first league win, a Luis Suarez-inspired 5-2 rout of Norwich City at Carrow Road which lifted Liverpool out of the relegation zone.Klopps early statementsIn contrast, Klopp went unbeaten in his first six matches across three competitions, including a come-from-behind 3-1 victory at then champions Chelsea. Jurgen Klopp shows his delight having got the better of Chelsea early on in his Liverpool reign And two league games later came an equally impressive 4-1 demolition of title favourites City at the Etihad that raised eyebrows across the Premier League.Initial struggles at homeBoth men, however, had to wait before collecting their first top-flight wins at Anfield, with Rodgers taking until his fifth home match against Reading and Klopp his third versus Swansea City. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp applauds the Klop having recorded his first Premier League victory at Anfield Inconsistent RedsThe early phases of Rodgers and Klopps tenures were marked by inconsistent league form, with the former sitting just four points above the drop zone after winning just once in the whole of November, although that alarming run did include an impressive draw at Chelsea. Daniel Sturridge shakes hands with Jurgen Klopp following Liverpools 6-1 demolition of Southampton in the League Cup quarter-finals in December 2015 The German, meanwhile, saw his new charges follow those vibrant displays at Stamford Bridge, the Etihad and St Marys - a 6-1 triumph over Southampton in the League Cup - with lacklustre performances at St James Park and Vicarage Road in December.Green shoots of recoveryRodgers and Klopp both guided Liverpool into the knockout phase of the Europa League before Christmas in their debut campaigns, meaning they could then concentrate on trying to improve their league positions heading into the New Year.Rodgers side had moved up to ninth, eight points off fourth, by the end of 2012, with Klopps team in seventh, just five points adrift of the Champions League places, after inflicting a first league loss on the road that season for future champions Leicester City. Brendan Rodgers managed to lure Daniel Sturridge to Anfield in January 2013 However, while the German opted not to dip into the transfer market that January (apart from the purchase of Marko Grujic, who was immediately loaned back to Red Star Belgrade), the Irishman crucially brought in both Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho to bolster his ranks for the second half of the 2012/13 campaign. And it did not take long for that duo to have an impact on results, with the Reds causing neutrals to sit up and take notice following back-to-back 2-2 draws at Arsenal and City.Klopps men, meanwhile, were also gaining momentum after beating Stoke City in January to reach the League Cup final, a competition Rodgers team, as holders, had exited at the fourth round stage following a 3-1 home loss to Swansea.Top-four ambitionsRodgers did not record his first win over a top-four rival until beating Spurs 3-2 at Anfield on March 10 2013, a result that moved Liverpool to within seven points of fourth-placed Chelsea, albeit having played a game more than the Blues. Brendan Rodgers recorded his first win over a top-four rival against Spurs in March 2013 At the same stage of the 2015/16 season, Klopps side were six points off fourth-placed City - who they did the double over thanks to a comprehensive 3-0 win at Anfield in March - but cup distractions soon put paid to any dreams of Champions League qualification.Cup half full or empty?Rodgers Reds were soon eliminated from both the FA Cup and Europa League following defeats to Oldham Athletic and Zenit St Petersburg respectively. In contrast, Klopp - whose team were knocked out of the FA Cup in the fourth round by West Ham United - managed to keep Liverpools cup dreams alive on two fronts. Jurgen Klopp salutes Liverpools fans after beating Manchester United in the Europa League round-of-16 tie And despite the Merseysiders suffering heartbreak after losing the League Cup final to City on penalties, that was soon forgotten after thrilling victories over United and Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League.Strong league finishesBoth managers campaigns got better as their seasons wore on, with Rodgers losing only one of his last 12 fixtures for a seventh-place league finish, 12 points behind Arsenal in the fourth and final Champions League berth. Jurgen Klopp following Liverpools Europa League Cup final defeat to Sevilla in May 2016 Despite trying to oversee Liverpools run to the Europa League final against Sevilla, Klopp also enjoyed an encouraging climax to the campaign with two losses in his final 12 top-flight encounters leaving the Reds in eighth, six points off fourth placed City. Gary Roenicke Jersey. .Start as you mean to go onOf course, Klopps first year in charge at Anfield has been split over two seasons, with the German also overseeing seven games so far this campaign. Jurgen Klopp celebrates Liverpools impressive start to the 2016/17 season Sadio Mane And continuing on their good form from the end of the previous season, Liverpool have won five of their opening seven fixtures to sit fourth in the table. What happened next for Rodgers?Rodgers also carried the momentum from the back end of his first campaign as Liverpool boss into the following season, with the Reds not losing any of their opening four league matches in 2013/14. Brendan Rodgers and Steven Gerrard during Liverpools 2013/14 campaign In fact, Rodgers would go on to oversee the clubs closest-ever Premier League title challenge that season, before falling at the final hurdle to hand City the championship.Tale of the tapeInterestingly, when both managers first years at the club are broken down, their Premier League records are remarkably similar, with each having lost nine games.Klopp does just edge it, though, with the German registering more wins, points, goals and possession in his 12 months on Merseyside, but Rodgers can point to more shots, interceptions, a higher passing accuracy and less goals conceded in his debut campaign (albeit from one more match). • DETROIT -- Prosecutors said Wednesday they plan to review a request for charges against a 28-year-old Detroit Tigers player following a sexual assault complaint. Jacob deGrom Jersey . The Wayne County prosecutors office has received a warrant request from police and a charging decision isnt expected this week. The prosecutors office didnt release the players name, but said the alleged assault took place March 30 at MotorCity Casino Hotel in Detroit. In April, The Associated Press and others reported 28-year-old Tigers right-hander Evan Reed was facing a sexual assault complaint. "A thorough review of all of the evidence must be conducted before a decision can be made," the prosecutors office said in a statement. "No further information about the case will be released until a charging decision is made." A statement Wednesday from David Gorcyca and Ben M. Gonek, Reeds attorneys, said Reed has fully co-operated with the Detroit Police Department since the investigation began, and Reed also voluntarily gave a statement to investigators. "Evan, through his lawyers, in a rare move also provided the Detroit Police Department with witness statements, a test result, and a supplemental witness statement which details the alleged complainants actions after the incident," they said. In the statement, Gorcyca and Gonek said they are confident the case "will be closed" after a review from prosecutors. The Tigers were in Cleveland on Wednesday to wrap up a series against the Indians before returning to Detroit. Reed, a reliever, is 0-1 with a 3.0 ERA this season. Hes pitched in 17 games. "I have had no discussions with Chad Johnson or his representation," Popp said Friday in an email. However, he appeared to confirm a report on Twitter from TSN this week that Johnson was on Montreals negotiation list.LONDON -- New season, new manager -- same misery at Manchester United. Louis van Gaal failed to usher in the bright new era expected at United on Saturday, watching in frustration as the team opened the season with a home loss for the first time in 42 years. The 20-time champions slumped to a 2-1 loss against Swansea, a team even David Moyes managed to beat comfortably a year earlier at the start of his short-lived reign. But the hosts lacked organization in defence at Old Trafford, allowing Gylfi Sigurdsson to score the winner from close range in the 72nd minute after United captain Wayne Rooneys overhead kick cancelled out Ki Sung-yeungs opener. In Van Gaal, United hired a proven manager who has won titles at Barcelona and Bayern Munich. But the Dutch coach was given a clear indication of just how difficult it will be to turn a team that finished seventh in May into top-four finishers again. "Its a very bad day for us ... we didnt play as a team," Van Gaal said. "I saw a lot of players looking very nervous, making the wrong choices and that is a pity." But it was a victorious opening day in a new job for Mauricio Pochettino, whose Tottenham side won 1-0 at West Ham after debutant Eric Dier scored in stoppage time. Tottenhams north London rival, Arsenal, also profited from a stoppage time goal as Aaron Ramsey scrambled the ball over the line to clinch a 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace. Arsenals first opening-day win since 2009 came after Laurent Koscielny headed in an equalizer to cancel out Brede Hangelands opener for Palace, which is without a manager following Tony Pulis surprising departure on Thursday. There were mixed fortunes for the Premier League newcomers. Queens Park Rangers, which made an instant return to the topflight, lost 1-0 at home to Hull. But Leicester, which has been away from the elite for a decade, earned a point by drawing 2-2 with Everton. Marcus Stroman Jersey. Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion, who both flirted with relegation last season, opened the new campaign by drawing 2-2. Aston Villa, whose owner Randy Lerner is trying to sell the club, began with a 1-0 win at Stoke. In the late game, Arsenal, which spent more time atop the standings than any other team last season only to finish fourth, was hosting Crystal Palace in the late game. The first goal of the season came 28 minutes into the game at Old Trafford after United failed to fix its defensive deficiencies in the off-season. Sigurdsson picked up the ball from Nathan Dyer and squared for Ki to score. Van Gaal said his team had felt tense in the first half, feeling the pressure to deliver. But Rooney dragged the hosts back into the game, hooking the ball over his head from Phil Jones flick-on in the 53rd. United couldnt produce a second, with Rooney sending a free kick against the goal frame, and Sigurdsson was able to bundle the ball over the line after Jefferson Monteros cross wasnt cleared. "We have built up a lot of confidence and then it shall be smashed down because of this result," Van Gaal said. "We are not reaching our level." Tottenham wasnt at the level expected of the team either, but had better luck. Although defender Kyle Naughton was sent off in the 29th for handling, Mark Noble put West Hams resultant penalty wide. And after West Ham was also reduced to 10 men in the second half when centre back James Collins received a second yellow card, Dier rounded goalkeeper Adrian and slotted the ball into an empty net. Manchester City begins its title defence at Newcastle on Sunday when last seasons runner-up, Liverpool, hosts Southampton after buying a trio of players from the club during the off-season. The final game of the opening weekend sees Chelsea travel to newcomer Burnley on Monday. ' ' '

  • The Major League Baseball non-waiver deadline is at 4pm et and with 19 of the leagues 30 teams either holding a playoff spot - or within five games of one - the list of potential buyers is considerably larger than the list of sellers. Sports Jerseys . That, however, certainly doesnt preclude business, even of the significant kind, from being done in the next day or in the coming weeks (the waiver deadline is August 31 at 11:59pm et). Weve already seen the likes of Jeff Samardzija (Oakland Athletics), Justin Masterson (St. Louis Cardinals) and Jake Peavy (San Francisco Giants) find new homes in the last days and weeks, but there could be more movement done in the coming hours and days. Here are a few players and teams to watch out for as the deadline approaches. Philadelphia Phillies: Ruben Amaro, Jr. appears to be open for business. Three-fifths of his rotation (Cole Hamels, Cliff Lee and A.J. Burnett) are available, as are first baseman Ryan Howard, outfielder Marlon Byrd, reliever Antonio Bastardo and closer Jonathan Papelbon. Getting deals done might be easier said than done, though, with significant money owed to most of these players. Chances are, the Phillies will have to eat some cash to get anything done. Amaro will be looking for the biggest return from Hamels, but few teams seem to be willing to pay a steep asking price. If anybody is interested, you can imagine the Los Angeles Dodgers will be among them. Lee, the 2008 Cy Young winner, has led the entire MLB in starting pitchers WAR since then with an incredible mark of 38.3. The rub on dealing Lee, though, is that history shows that the return probably wont pan out. In the three trades that have seen Lee switch jerseys since his Cy Young, 11 prospects have gone the other way. Only Carlos Carrasco and Justin Smoak are currently in the MLB among them. Howard is likely to draw the least amount of interest due to age, money and injury history. Burnett and Byrd are owed the least amount of money and should be on the move. Burnett lives in Maryland, making the Baltimore Orioles the most obvious destination for the veteran. Trading Byrd will be a little bit more complicated, as his four-team no trade clause includes the Seattle Mariners, a team with the most apparent interest. The New York Yankees also appear interested in the 36-year-old. Not entirely outside the realm of possiblity? Amaro attempting to package several of his assets into a blockbuster deal akin to the one made between the Dodgers and Boston Red Sox in 2012 that saw Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett and Carl Crawford head to the west coast. Tampa Bay Rays: The Rays are on a torrid streak right now, winning 11 of 12, and find themselves now just five games out of an AL Wild Card. The impetus for the team to move assets that existed when they were 18 games under .500 in June has greatly abated, but not entirely. The team will reportedly still take calls on some of its veteran players, including former AL Cy Young Award winner David Price, the teams all-time leading lefty pitcher. While the likes of Price, Ben Zobrist and Matt Joyce could be available, that doesnt mean that the anybody will meet general manager Andrew Freidmans asking price. Furthermore, with Price under contract for another season, its not a stretch to suggest that the haul the Rays would receive for Price in the offseason or even during next year wouldnt be all that different than what theyd get now. And what kind of message would it send to the Rays fans to pull the plug on the this team right when its in the midst of the best baseball its played all season? Obviously, the Rays fan base or lack thereof has been a sore spot in recent years for a team that has made the playoffs four of the past six seasons, but if the team does intend to retain what support is does have and cultivate any new fandom, selling off assets now might not be the best play. If Price is dealt, he becomes the seventh Cy Young winner in the last 10 years to be traded after taking home the award. Cleveland Indians: A playoff team a year ago, the Indians are in a similar position to the Rays in that their playoff hopes arent entirely extinguished, but Wednesdays trade of Masterson could indicate that general manager Chris Antonettis focus has turned to 2015. LOOGY Marc Rzepczynski could be an easy sell for any club looking to shore up its bullpen, while Asdrubal Cabreras time appears to be coming to an end in Cleveland. With highly touted infield prospect Francisco Lindor appearing to be ready to go at a big league-level next season, Antonetti could look to recoup some assets for the impending free agent second baseman. Both the Jays and Giants have reportedly kicked the tires on the 28-year-old two-time All-Star. Boston Red Sox: The defending World Series champions appear on course to be the first team since the 1997 Florida Marlins to go from first to worst in the following season. The team has already parted with Peavy and Felix Doubront (Chicago Cubs), but their two biggest assets remain in starters Jon Lester and John Lackey. Lester was scratched from his Wednesday night start against the Toronto Blue Jays in anticipation of an impending deal, while Lackey, scheduled to pitch on Friday, has had his name has come up in talks in recent days with the Miami Marlins. General manager Ben Cherington has never been one to shy away from making bold moves, but right now, he appears to taking a wait-and-see approach. Lester and Lackey are free agent at seasons end, so its not inconceivable that the team could move them for prospects now and make plays for them in the offseason. Lester, after a poor 2013, has bounced back considerably, on pace for career highs in ERA, innings per start and walk rate. The Blue Jays and Orioles were said to have interest in Lester earlier than the week, but that appears to have cooled on both ends. Even with the acquisition of Masterson, the Cardinals could still make a play for Lester. Reliever Andrew Miller could also be available, along with outfielder Jonny Gomes. Texas Rangers: Few teams have had a more disappointing 2014 than the Rangers, a preseason favourite to compete for the AL West crown. With their playoff hopes crippled by injuries and underperforming stars, the Rangers find themselves in the rare position of being sellers at the deadline after playoff berths in three of the last four seasons. General manager Jon Daniels has already traded relievers Jason Frasor to the Kansas City Royals and Joakim Soria to the Detroit Tigers and lefty Neal Cotts could be next. A free agent at seasons end, Cotts is effective against both lefty and righty opposition. Both the Orioles and Atlanta Braves have already expressed interest. Outfielder Alex Rios could also be on the move. Rios is also an impending free agent and could be an option for a team looking for production in the outfield or at the designated hitters spot. The Blue Jays were said to have held talks with the Rangers earlier this month. Though down and out now, the Rangers dont see themselves in a rebuild. Looking to contend in 2015, expect Adrian Beltre to be off of the table. Other players to watch: SS Martin Prado and 2B Aaron Hill (Diamondbacks), 2B Chris Denorfia, RHP Ian Kennedy and RHP Joaquin Benoit (Padres), C Kurt Suzuki and OF Josh Willingham (Twins), OF Dayan Viciedo (White Sox) and RHP Chad Qualls (Astros). His caddie had already packed his golf clubs into a travel case. He viewed his visit to the CBS Sports tower as nothing more than a courtesy. His only hope was that the other players still on the course -- Tiger Woods and Justin Rose among them -- might find it as difficult to close out a victory as Scott has over the years. "Im pretty shocked," Scott said after his 5-under 66 gave him a one-shot win at Liberty National. "There were so many guys out there with a chance and I really didnt think I had much of a chance. If you hang around the lead long enough, youre going to win some, youre going to lose some. And this one went my way." Scott was watching from the locker room when Rose, who had a 25-foot putt for the outright lead, ran it 5 feet by the hole and three-putted for bogey. Clubs unpacked, Scott was on his way to the range when the groans from around the 18th green told him Woods narrowly missed his 25-foot birdie putt from off the back of the green to tie for the lead. Once on the range, a large video board showed Gary Woodland miss his third straight birdie putt from inside 10 feet. "I guess its different playing an hour-and-a-half in front of the leaders, the guys who have been under pressure all day than when youre out there," Scott said. "I know how they feel. When the pressure is on you to close out, its much harder, and the holes become much harder and shots are far more crucial. "I feel like Ive been given a bit of a gift," he said. "But Ill take it." Scott finished at 11-under 273 and moved to a career-best No. 2 in the world. Woods suffered a back spasm on the par-5 13th hole and hooked a fairway metal so far left that it landed in a swamp on the other side of the 15th fairway. Woods dropped to all fours in pain before slowly getting up. He also dropped a shot on the 15th, and then gamely fought back with birdies on the 16th and 17th holes to get within one. His birdie putt from off the 18th green was one short turn of falling. "Thought I made it," Woods said after his 69. Woods had all four rounds in the 60s for the first time in a year on the PGA Tour, though it wasnt enough. He battled stiffness in his lower back all week, which he attributed to a soft bed in his hotel room -- the second straight year he has had back issues from a mattress at this event. In a brief interview with CBS Sports, he said it was "hypothetical" when asked if he would compete in the Deutsche Bank Championship, the next playoff event that starts Friday on the TPC Boston. The tournament gives its charity money to Woods foundation. Woods already missed the AT&T National this year, which also benefits his foundation. "I just got off and Im not feeling my best right now," he said. Rosse wasnt feeling that great, either. Fake Sports Jerseys. He was in position to win the tournament with a birdie putt, and the U.S. Open champion did not want to leave it short. Instead, he knocked it by farther than he imagined, the ball stayed on the high side of the cup the whole way. "I got too aggressive," said Rose, who closed with a 68. "I thought it was a putt to win the tournament. Its tough to take." Kevin Chappell had a two-shot lead after a birdie on the 10th hole, but then played the next seven holes in 7-over par and closed with a 76. Woodland had a 73. Matt Kuchar, who shared the 54-hole lead with Woodland, fell back with a triple bogey on No. 9. His only birdie was on the 18th hole, and it gave him a 78. "I found a way to hang in there and grind it out and gave myself a chance on the back nine on Sunday, which is everything you can ask for," Woodland said. It was the second time Woods has missed a playoff by one shot at Liberty National. Graham DeLaet of Canada, whose 65 matched Phil Mickelson for the low score of the final round, also tied for second. DeLaet will move up to No. 9 in the Presidents Cup standings, and with one week before qualifying ends, is in good shape to make the International team. Scott won for the second time this year, and at least put himself into the conversation for PGA Tour player of the year if he were to go on to win the FedEx Cup. He is No. 2 in the standings behind Woods, though the $10 million prize does not come into view until the Tour Championship. The first playoff event was packed with plenty of energy on a spectacular day across from the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline. Five players had at least a share of the lead at some point in the final round. Woods put up a great fight despite his back injury. Scott played the final 24 holes without a bogey. Sunday also had some of the emotions found at Q-school for players whose season came to an abrupt end. And it was just as wild at the bottom. Only the top 100 players in the FedEx Cup advance to the second playoff event next week outside Boston. Geoff Ogilvy could have joined them except for missing a 2 1/2-foot par putt on the final hole that ultimately knocked him out of the top 100. Camilo Villegas, at No. 110, thought he needed a 6-foot par putt on the last hole to advance. He missed it and was visibly angry. More than an hour later, Aaron Baddeley appeared to be a lock to advance to Boston despite being at No. 119. Baddeley, however, bogeyed his last three holes, missing a 5-foot par putt on the 18th. That knocked him out and put Villegas back in at No. 100. Scott missed a 15-foot birdie on the 18th hole that he thought might have been enough for a playoff at best. "I thought I needed at least one more to even think about hanging around," said Scott, who stayed long enough to collect his first FedEx Cup playoff win. ' ' '

  • NAPLES, Fla. Peter Moylan Jersey Braves . -- Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig was arrested on a reckless driving charge for the second time this year after officers clocked him going 110 mph in a 70 mph zone. A news release from the Florida Highway Patrol said a white Mercedes driven by the 23-year-old Cuban defector was pulled over around 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Authorities said Puig was arrested and charged with reckless driving and taken to the Collier County Jail for processing. Puig lives in the Miami area during the off-season. Dodgers spokesman Joe Jareck declined to comment on Puigs latest arrest. In April, when he was still in the minors, Puig was charged with reckless driving and speeding after Chattanooga, Tenn., police clocked him going 97 mph in a 50 mph zone. The charges were dismissed in November after Puig completed community service in Los Angeles. Puig was an instant sensation with the Dodgers last season, batting .319 with 19 home runs and 42 RBIs. He helped them reach the NL championship series, where they lost to St. Louis, and was runner-up for the Rookie of the Year award. Puig signed a $42 million, seven-year contract in June 2012, a record for a Cuban defector. He received a $12 million signing bonus and made $2 million last season. Mike Lum Jersey Braves . PAUL, Minn. BUFFALO, N.Y. -- First, Ryan Miller. Now, Pat LaFontaine. A day after trading their star goalie to St. Louis, the Buffalo Sabres lost another face of their franchise after LaFontaine abruptly resigned as president of hockey operations on Saturday a little more than three months after being brought in to provide a new direction to the NHLs last-place team. The Sabres announced the decision in a news release issued after speculation had been raised of a potential front-office shake-up involving LaFontaine. "I would like to thank Pat for all he has done for the organization," Sabres owner Terry Pegula said in the release. "Pat joined us at a very difficult time, and helped transition the organization down a new path." The Sabres said LaFontaine would be returning to his previous role working with the National Hockey League. LaFontaine had been working with the league on player safety issues before being hired by the Sabres in mid-November. The former Sabres captains arrival was hailed as a major turning point for a struggling team. LaFontaine took over following a change in the front office during which general manager Darcy Regier and coach Ron Rolston were dismissed following the Sabres 4-15-1 start. LaFontaines first move was hiring former Sabres coach Ted Nolan to take over as coach on an interim basis for the remainder of the season. LaFontaines next step came in January, when he hired Tim Murray as general manager. "Terry Pegula hired me in November, and my primary objective was to lead the Sabres organization through a time of transition," LaFontaine said in the Sabres release. "Im proud of what weve been able to accomplish in a short period of time, and want to thank Terry and Kim Pegula for the opportunity and their support during my time with the Sabres." LaFontaines resignation still comes as a major surprise. In January, LaFontaine talked openly about how he would use his connections to USA Hockey in a bid to lure national and international events to Buffalo. He leaves a day after Murray made his first big splash by trading star goalie Ryan Miller and captain Steve Ott to the St. Louis Blues. In exchange, the Sabres acquired goalie Jaroslav Halak, forward Chris Stewart, prospect William Carrier, a 2015 first-round pick and a conditional 2016 thhird-round pick in a deal reached in advance of the NHL trade deadline on Wednesday. Discount Jerseys Custom. The Sabres (18-34-8) had the day off on Saturday, and return to practice on Sunday before travelling to play at Dallas on Monday. They remain in last place, but are enjoying their first three-game winning streak following a 4-2 win over the San Jose Sharks on Friday. This is not the first time LaFontaine has abruptly stepped down as an NHL team executive. In July 2006, LaFontaine quit the New York Islanders a little over a month after being brought in to serve as senior adviser to owner Charles Wang. In Buffalo, LaFontaines absence was notable this week once the team returned to the ice following the leagues Olympic break. He was not spotted in the press box during the Sabres three-game homestand that began with a 3-2 win over Carolina on Tuesday. That was unusual because LaFontaine had previously spent time watching games from the press-box level in Pegulas box, alongside Murray and several of the owners associates. LaFontaine also missed the teams "Power Play Luncheon" for fans on Friday, when he was scheduled to speak along with fellow former Sabres greats Gilbert Perreault, Rene Robert and Danny Gare. The crowd was informed LaFontaine had the flu. The Sabres have become a top-heavy organization since Regiers dismissal. Pegula created the position of president of hockey operations to hire LaFontaine. And Pegula did so only after LaFontaine declined a chance to become the GM by saying he didnt think he had enough experience for that job. Along with hiring Murray, the Sabres also brought in Hockey Hall of Fame member and long-time executive Craig Patrick to serve as a special adviser. LaFontaine backed the hiring of Murray and Patrick, by referring to both as his "wingers." He also discussed how important it was for him to be building a front-office team that could work together in rebuilding a team that has missed the playoffs in each of the past two seasons, and not won a playoff round since reaching the 2007 Eastern Conference finals. Its not clear what effect LaFontaines departure will have on the teams short-term future, including Nolans status. Murray said this week hes already had discussions with Nolan about extending his contract beyond this season. ' ' '

  • BUFFALO, N. Vans Shoes Clearance Sale .Y. -- The Ottawa Senators showed some rust and turned the puck over more than a few times in their season opener. It wasnt the kind of game coaches are particularly proud of, but goaltender Craig Andersons brilliance was enough to give the Senators a 1-0 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Friday night at First Niagara Center. Anderson made 35 saves for his 23rd career shutout and stole the spotlight in a battle of potential U.S. Olympic hopefuls against Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller. "You want to be there for your team, give them an opportunity to win," Anderson said. "When you watch the other guy at the other end make big save after big save, it just gives you a little fire under your butt to kind of return the favour." It was just about as entertaining as a 1-0 game gets, due in part to a bevy of mistakes by the Senators and Sabres. Neither Ottawa coach Paul MacLean nor Buffalos Ron Rolston was all too happy about that, but it was easy for the Senators to chalk this one up to it being their first game of the regular season. "I think it was a high-paced game the whole game," said defenceman Erik Karlsson, who scored the games only goal late in the third. "It really showed that we havent played in a while and we made some obvious mistakes, but at the same time I still think that over periods of time we really played well and created chances." When the Sabres got quality chances, Anderson was there to compensate. The 32-year-old appreciated some blocked shots and was thankful for some lucky bounces, like Steve Ott fanning with an empty net, but he was locked in just about from the drop of the puck. He and Miller had to be, thanks to four penalty calls in the first eight minutes. The Sabres and Senators combined to put 39 shots on net in the first, setting a record for the most in a scoreless period in the NHLs expansion era that dates to 1967, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The pressure ratcheted up as the shots and saves piled up, but Anderson didnt falter. "In baseball, guys need run support and in hockey, goalies need goal support," he said. "Your job as a pitcher or a goalie is just to make sure your teams in there at the end and give yourselves an opportunity to at least get a point. Thats kind of the way the night went. It was going back and forth, and I was just trying to make that next save and not worry or get too far ahead of yourself." Miller had already made 44 saves by the time Karlsson scored on the games 80th shot with 1:35 left. Clarke MacArthur found Karlsson with a perfect pass, and the Sabres franchise goaltender had almost no chance of stopping it. "I was just waiting, snuck in there," Karlsson said. "Hes been so good, Miller, the whole game, so I just figure, OK Ive got to try and put it between the legs when hes moving over, and it worked." Miller took little solace in making 45 stops and firing up a sellout crowd of 19,070 for the Sabres home opener. "I just needed to make one more save there," he said. "Its disappointing." He made plenty of them, earning tons of credit from the Senators for his "outstanding" and "unbelievable" play. But Rolston, even while praising Miller, said he didnt like "pretty much everything" else from his team. MacLean wasnt glowing, either. The Senators coach had to keep his own frustration in check as he lamented a lot of his players "playing for both teams" by coughing up the puck and getting caught in bad situations. "I think its an important part that you dont get carried away," MacLean said. "Its easy to get carried away and get looser and looser. I think we did a little bit of that tonight. We got a little carried away and we really had to work hard to get our focus back on how we had to play the game." Focus came in the form of Anderson making sublime saves, including nine on Sabres co-captain Thomas Vanek. The Senators had enough faith in their goaltender that they didnt have to fear making a mistake. "It helps a lot, especially for players like me," Karlsson said. "I can take chances sometimes and I know that unless the other player beats him, hes going to make a stop. Today he stopped them all." Karlsson had a clutch stop of his own, diving and fully extending at the net to cut off Vanek after getting beat during the third period. "Hes the one and only. We love him," Anderson said of Karlsson. "He may get out of position, but hes so fast and hes so smart that hes able to get back and make huge plays for us. If he doesnt work as hard as he did, he doesnt get back and maybe Vanek scores there and we lose the game." Playing so close to the edge in a game that was scoreless for 58-plus minutes isnt ideal for the Senators, who visit the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night and hope to have some "kinks" figured out, according to MacLean. But Anderson was more up to the task against the Sabres, delivering a memorable opening-night performance. "Hes prepared himself really well, hes got a lot of confidence," Ottawa captain Jason Spezza said. "Hes one of the best goalies in the game, and were lucky to have a guy that gives us a chance to win every night. The saves he makes enables us to stick around in that game and get the win." • ST. Scarpe Nike Scontate On Line . PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Nyjer Morgan used his speed to get two key infield hits early in the game. His rare long ball provided an important late run. Morgan and Michael Bourn both drove in two runs, Josh Tomlin won his second straight start and the Cleveland Indians beat the Tampa Bay Rays 6-5 on Sunday. "He always plays with energy," Indians manager Terry Francona said about Morgan. "We were looking for a way to get him in there today and Im glad we did." Morgan had an RBI infield single that rolled to a stop near the line between home and third before Bourn hit a two-run double as the Indians took a 3-1 lead in the second. Morgan also hit his first major league homer since July 30, 2012, an eighth-inning solo shot that made it 6-2. "I had to get something out of the infield today," a smiling Morgan said. Tomlin (2-0), who pitched just once in the big leagues last season after right elbow surgery in 2012, allowed two runs and six hits over six innings in his second outing this year. "The guys made the plays in the outfield and the infield, and thats the reason I won a game," Tomlin said. Cleveland took two of three in the series after entering with a seven-game road skid. "This is a tough place to play," Francona said. "Finding a way to beat them here is great. Ive sat in this chair too many times and been miserable." Matt Joyce homered and had two RBIs for the Rays, who went 1-5 on their homestand. Chris Archer (2-2) gave up four runs and eight hits in five-plus innings. "I think very simply put, were not playing the calibre of baseball right now that is a winning calibre of baseball," Rays third baseman Evan Longoria said. A three-run eighth pulled the Rays to 6-5. Ben Zobrist scored the first run in the inning when reliever Marc Rzepczynski made an errant throw to second on what could have been an inning-ending double play. Cody Allen allowed Wil Myers RBI single and hit Desmond Jennings with a pitch to load the bases. Yunel Escobar hit a sacrifice fly. "I had plenty of time. ... I rushed it," Rzepczynski said. "When I get those, I get super excited. Throw better sinkers to second than I do home sometimes." Bryan Shaw pitched a perfect ninth in place of demoted closer John Axford for his second save. Yan Gomes hit a leadoff homer that chased Archer during a two-run sixth that gave Cleveland a 5-2 advantage. Morgan reached on a bunt single off Brad Boxberger when a call was overturned on replay. Morgan advanced on a balk and wild pitch, then scored the innings second run on Mike Aviles sacrifice fly. Joyce hit a first-inning solo homer off Tomlin. Joyce, who is 6 for 12 with two homers against the right-hander, had an RBI single in the fourth. Cleveland threatened in the first but Michael Brantley was thrown out trying to score on Carlos Santanas two-out double. Santana went 2 for 3 with two walks and increased his batting average 12 points to .148. Brantley extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a third-inning single. NOTES: Francona tweaked his rotation for a three-game series at Toronto. It also extends the teams home winless skid to six. Their last win at MTS Centre was November 15 over Philadelphia. The Jets will play seven of the next 10 on the road, starting with a two-game trip -- Monday in Columbus and Tuesday in Buffalo (both games on TSN Jets, TSN Radio 1290). The Stars opened the scoring with Tyler Seguin getting his 16th; the goal coming off a bad line change by the Jets. Matt Halischuk with his third tied the game, with Mark Scheifele and Michael Frolik drawing assists. Scheifele now has seven points in his last 10 games, while Frolik has eight points in his last 11 games. Halischuk left the game later in the first with an upper-body injury. Initial indication is the injury is more than day-to-day. But the game did not stay tied for long. As was the case all game, one goal was quickly followed by another and 4:12 later Valeri Nuchushkin, the Stars 18-year-old rookie, made a great move on Ondrej Pavelec to score his fifth. A neutral zone turnover by the Jets contributed to this goal. Stars outshot the Jets 11-8 in the first. After failing to score on a five-on-three early in the second (second time in as many games after going three for three on their first three two man advantages), the Jets power play clicked for the fourth time in three games with Blake Wheeler tying the game, Olli Jokinen and Dustin Byfuglien assisting on the goal. But 48 seconds later, Jamie Benn with his 8th regained the lead for the Stars. One minute and seven seconds later, the Jets tied the game again, and again it was Wheeler. It was his 11th of the year, his sixth in six games and back-to-back two-goal games. Bryan Little with the assist to give him 22 points in the last 22 games. Then the turning point. Anthony Peluso was given five for boarding and a game misconduct for a hit on Alex Goligoski. The hit was a little late and appeared to catch Goligoski in the numbers and will certainly be reviewed by the Department of Player Safety. The Jets played the remainder of the game with 10 forwards. The Stars scored twice on the major penalty with Benn and Seguin each getting their second goal of the game. Thee Jets dominated the early part of the period; at one point outshooting Dallas 14-4 but in the end the shots were 16-13 Jets. Yeezy 350 Italia. . To start the third, the Jets killed the remaining seconds on the power play then went to the attack and had a number of scoring chances but could not beat Kari Lehtonen. Then another defensive breakdown and Colton Sceviour on a breakaway beat Al Montoya to make it 6-3. Montoya replaced Pavelec to start the third. For Sceviour, it was his first NHL goal. Ollie Jokinen closed out the scoring with his 8th of the year with 1:41 left but the game would end 6-4. Jokinen has now surpassed his goal total from last year. Devin Setoguchi and Chris Thorburn drew assists on the goal. Shots in the third favoured the Jets 14-8 and 38-32 overall. Dallas is now 8-2-1 in their last 11 on the road. The Jets were again minus Evander Kane, although it appears he should be ready for Mondays game. Adam Pardy played in place of Keaton Ellberby. Pardy had been out the last eight. Statistically, Byfuglien lead in ice time at 27:49 and also in shots on goal with seven. He directed 15 shots at the Stars goal, with five being blocked and another three wide. Jokinen won 11 of 19 face-offs, Little nine of 16. Sergie Gonchar had a four-point game for Dallas and now has 48 points in 52 games against the Jets. Wheeler has eight points in seven career games against Dallas. Needless to say, it was a dejected Jets dressing room with comments ranging from "not acceptable" to "embarrassing." For coach Claude Noel, it was a "disappointing game and not only the result. Not a very intelligent game. Their first two goals came off bad line changes, the five minute major was costly, we wanted to contain their top line and we couldnt. It was a game we chased and every time we tied it, they would go ahead soon after. We didnt accomplish what we set out to do on this three game home stand (0-2-1). It was a step back today. I have not seen us play this way as a group for a long time. But we will regroup and start again." The Jets are now 3-11-3 inside their Central Division with the next three games against Eastern Conference teams (Columbus, Buffalo, Florida), although until this year Columbus was a Western Conference team. BARCELONA, Spain -- Former Barcelona player Luis Enrique promised a new start for the Catalan club after signing a two-year contract to become coach on Wednesday. Babe Ruth Jersey Braves . Luis Enrique signed the deal with club president Josep Bartomeu two days after it was announced by the club. That was two days after coach Gerardo Martino stepped down when Barcelona finished its first season without a major trophy in six years. "We believe that this is the beginning of a new Barcelona, a Barcelona that will excite again," Luis Enrique said. "When I left Barca the club told me that it was a see you later and they have kept their word. I cant wait to hear the hymn of Barcelona in the Camp Nou." The 44-year-old Luis Enrique won two league titles as a Barcelona player from 1996-2004 and coached its B team from 2008-11. He also coached at Roma, and led Celta Vigo to a respectable ninth-place finish this season after installing an attractive passing attack on the Barcelona model. Luis Enriques hiring continues a recent tradition of in-house coaches recently represented in Pep Guardiola and Tito Vilanova. That string was broken when Martino was hastily brought in last year after Vilanova resigned to focus on his battle with throat cancer that he eventually lost last month. Luis Enrique is the clubs eighth former captain to coach the club, joining such greats as Laszlo Kubala, Cesar Rodriguez, Johan Cruyff and Guardiola. Although Luis Enrique was never in the same class as them, he will be only the second former captain to coach the clubs B side and first team. Guardiola is the other. Luis Enrique asked not to be compared with Guardiola, and said his best quality as a coach was being a leader, not as an expert in tactics, despite his insider knowledge of Barcelonas ball-control approach. "I dont rely too heavily on tactical knowhow, instead I focus on managing a group, managing egos," he said. "There is work that goes on during the week, work based on knowing each player. I try to be everything a leader is." Luis Enriques immediate goal is to work with sports director Andoni Zubizarreta and rebuild a squad that has experienced a slow slide over the past two years. "He is a coach that knows our way of playing, our philosophy. We believe that we have put the squad that we are going to build for next season in good hands," said Zubizarreta, who also recalled that Enrique had "put a goal or two" past the former Barcelona goalkeeper when Enrique played for Real Madrid. Under Luis Enrique, Barcelona will be expected to bring in reinforcements to help Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta and Neymar. And he wont be measured -- at least not immediately -- against Guardiola, who won an unprecedented six titles in his first season and 14 of a possible 19 in four years. Luis Enrique acknowledged his other challenge is helping Messi rediscover the competitive spirit that the clubs all-time leading scorer appeared to lack during some matches after recovering from nagging muscle injuries last season. "I am thrilled to have the best player in the world on my team," Enrique said. "Its obvious that Messis output this season wasnt as incredible as in past years ... I hope that with me he can find his best version, but not only him, also Iniesta and Neymar and the rest." Luis Enrique can draw on links with three generations of players, having played alongside veteran Xavi Hernandez, coached former B team player Sergio Busquets, and taken rising talent Rafina Alcantara from Barcelona to Celta on loan and now back. Luis Enrique is one of the few players to have enjoyed successful stints at both Barcelona and Madrid. He occupies a special place among Barcelonas faithful as the one recent player to have left Madrid for Barcelona, in contrast to a group of former stars who left for the Spanish capital, including Luis Figo, Bernd Schuster and Michael Laudrup. The win puts the final playoff berth in Group A in question. If the Czechs beat Slovakia on Tuesday, they will go through. If they lose, Germany will get the last quarter-final berth.CHICAGO -- Bayern Munich forward Julian Green wants to play for the U.S. national team and has applied to FIFA to change his association from Germany. The 18-year-old, who was born in Tampa, Fla., played for Germany in three qualifiers for the 2014 European Under-19 Championship, making his debut last Oct. 10 against Belarus and getting assists two days later against Latvia and on Oct. 15 versus Scotland. He made his professional debut for Bayern on Nov. 27 as an 88th-minute substitute in a Champions League match at CSKA Moscow. FIFA since 2009 has allowed a one-time change in national team affiliation for a player who has appeared in an official match for a youth national team as long as the player had dual citizenship at the time. "We are absolutely thrilled," U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann said in a statement Tuesday. "He is a very special talent. We wanted him to feel comfortable with our program and listen to his heart when making this decision." Green trained with the U.S. team in Germany this month ahead of its exhibition game against Ukraine. "Obviously this was a big decision, and I spent a long time discussing it with my family,&quoot; Green said in a statement issued by the U. Rocky Colavito Jersey. S. Soccer Federation. "I was born in Florida and my father still lives there, so I have deep roots in the U.S. Im very proud to be representing the United States. "A big part of the decision was the experience I had in Frankfurt. All the players were super nice and welcomed me from the beginning. Clint Dempsey gave me a jersey with my name on it, and the way they supported me gave me a lot of belief. The coaches have shown a lot of trust in me, and now I hope to do everything I can to earn a spot on the World Cup roster." Green has been invited to the U.S. training camp ahead of an April 2 exhibition against Mexico in Glendale, Ariz. He will become the latest German-American to join the U.S. program under Klinsmann, following Jermaine Jones, Fabian Johnson, Daniel Williams, Timmy Chandler and Alfredo Morales. Klinsmann played for Germanys team that won the 1990 World Cup and the 1996 European Championship, and he coached Germany to third place in the 2006 World Cup. He moved to California after retiring as a player in 1998 and replaced Bob Bradley as U.S. coach three years ago. ' ' '

  • Loughborough Lightning earned a 20-goal victory over Team Northumbria as the Netball Superleague edged closer to its regular season conclusion. NMD Fake . Kamloops, B.C., the host city of this years Tim Hortons Brier, is where he won his first Canadian mens curling crown in 1996.PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Eagles were predicted to win five or six games under new head coach Chip Kelly. Called on from the college ranks to replace Andy Reid, Kelly implemented a whole new atmosphere in the City of Brotherly Love and now has the Eagles in the playoffs for the first time since 2010. The Eagles won 10 games and took advantage of a weak NFC East by capturing the division title on the final weekend of the regular season. Now theyre set to host Drew Brees and the high-powered New Orleans Saints tonight at Lincoln Financial Field in the Wild Card round. You can watch the game on CTV beginning at 8pm et/5pm pt. Kellys debut as an NFL head coach got off to a rousing start with a big win at Washington on "Monday Night Football," but the Eagles fell back to earth with three straight losses. They snapped the slide with a win at New York and quarterback Nick Foles replaced an injured Michael Vick to take over for good under center. Foles made his first start in Week 6 at Tampa Bay and helped the Eagles even their record at 3-3. However, Foles would suffer through his worst start as a pro on Oct. 20 versus Dallas and was knocked out of the game with a concussion. After a brief Vick appearance and a Matt Barkley sighting the next week in a loss to the Giants, Foles stormed back with seven touchdown passes at Oakland, then led Philadelphia to another road win against Green Bay. The Eagles won five in a row at one point and erased a 3-5 start by finishing the season 7-1. Philadelphia squeezed past the Cowboys, 24-22, last Sunday night to capture the division crown and bring playoff football back to the Linc. "Its a great feeling," Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson said about returning to the playoffs. "Our fans are going to go wild. Its a great opportunity to bring the playoffs to Philadelphia on Saturday. We just need to have a great week of practice and get ready for a good team coming in here." Foles passed for 263 yards with two TDs and no interceptions in Big D, while the heart-and-soul of the offense, running back LeSean McCoy, recorded 131 yards on 27 carries to break the franchises single-season rushing mark, which was previously held by Wilbert Montgomery. McCoy led the NFL in rushing yards (1,607) and yards from scrimmage (2,126) and will face a Saints defense rated 19th in defending the run (111.6 yards per game). The Eagles finished the season first in rushing yards (160.4) and second in total yards (417.2). McCoy, Foles and Jackson give the Eagles a scary offensive trio, while the speedy wide receiver had a career-high 82 receptions for 1,332 yards, the second-most in team lore. Not to be forgotten, wide receiver Riley Cooper had a career year and put a foolish offseason incident in the past by hauling in 47 passes for 835 yards and eight TDs. He emerged as a big-play threat and averaged 17.8 yards per catch. All that wouldnt have happened if it wasnt for the efficient play of Foles. The lanky QB threw for 2,891 yards with 27 touchdown passes and only two interceptions, the best TD/INT ration in NFL history. Foles 119.2 passer rating led the league and he compiled 21 TD passes over the last eight games of the regular season. Foles now faces Brees and the two attended Westlake High School in Austin, TX. "Ive always watched him from afar," Foles said of Brees. "Hes a great player and one of the best to ever play the game at the position. Hes a guy Ive watched and learned from and hes done a lot of great things throughout his career, on and off the field, and hes a great role model for fellow players, kids and adults." New Orleans failed in its bid to capture an NFC South title and perhaps its struggles on the road this season didnt help. The Saints were an impressive 8-0 under the lights at the SuperDome, but 3-5 in enemy stadiums. NMD Sale. Brees and the Saints captured a playoff berth with last Sundays 42-17 demolition of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as Brees passed for 381 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions and surpassed the 5,000-yard passing mark for the fourth time in his Hall of Fame career. Brees, who has eclipsed the 5,000- yard passing mark in each of the previous three seasons, threw a TD pass in every game this year, finishing with 39 total, 5,162 yards and 12 INTs. The Saints did not make the playoffs a season ago when head coach Sean Payton was suspended for the entire year because of a bounty scandal. Payton and Brees have formed a solid friendship both on and off the field, and the quarterback is ready to get going again for another Super Bowl run. "That is always where the expectation has been," Brees said of reaching the playoffs with or without Payton. "I know that we fell short of that last year and that was disappointing. We expected to be here with Sean, without Sean. Obviously having him back is great and he has a way of just little things to just kind of remind you of the focus and the opportunity and why we are all here." Brees, who won the Super Bowl in 2009, is the only player in NFL history with two or more 5,000-yard seasons and has three straight 300-yard passing games in the playoffs. New Orleans welcomed Payton back by winning its first five games, but stumbled in a road matchup at New England. The Saints responded by winning four of five games, then dropped three of the next four before closing the regular season by crushing the Bucs. The Saints probably thought winning the division would be a no-brainer because Atlanta struggled, but Carolina came out of nowhere behind Cam Newton to claim the division and a first-round bye. Much like the Eagles minus the ground attack, the Saints have a solid quarterback and plenty of talented pass catchers. Pro Bowl tight end Jimmy Graham finished the season with 86 catches for 1,215 yards and 16 touchdowns, becoming the first tight end in NFL history to record at least 1,200 yards and 10 touchdowns in two different seasons. Graham had six 100-yard games and is a huge target for the Saints. "Its been a good year for this team. We have been through a lot," Graham said. "We have had ups and downs. We have learned a lot from our mistakes." Graham and wide receivers Marques Colston (943 yards, 5 TD) and Kenny Stills (641 yards, 5 TD) get to line up against Philadelphias average secondary. The Eagles were last in passing yards allowed (289.8) and 29th in total yards allowed (394.2) in the regular season. They have played better on defense, though, especially against talented receivers in Larry Fitzgerald, Calvin Johnson and Brandon Marshall. But while Graham seems to be Philadelphias biggest issue, it will be running back Darren Sproles who can wreak havoc. Sproles was one of four players with at least 70 receptions (71) and finished with 604 yards receiving and a pair of touchdowns. Running back Pierre Thomas aided in New Orleans pass attack by grabbing 77 passes for 513 yards and three scores. Thomas also had a team-high 549 rushing yards and two TDs. He is nursing a chest injury, but should play. The Saints, losers in three straight on the road, were second behind Denver in passing yards (307.4) and fourth in total yards (399.4). New Orleans and Philadelphia will meet for the third time in the playoffs, as the Eagles won back in 1992 and the Saints prevailed in 2006. The Eagles lead the all-time series by a 16-12 count, but New Orleans has won two in a row and four of the past five encounters between teams. ' ' '

  • MEMPHIS, Tenn. Vapormax Plus Black Cheap . - Jeff Green has helped Memphis win seven of eight games since joining the team two weeks ago.The team got Green in a three-team trade from Boston on Jan. 12 in the hope the forward can push the Grizzlies deep into the post-season. Inserting one player, even with Greens talents, means a transition for all, so the Grizzlies are busy redefining roles to find the best combinations. The changes are working so far. Memphis has been winning and Green has reached double figures in six games, including 21 points on the road at Orlando and 18 last weekend in a home victory over the Philadelphia 76ers.He is averaging 13.6 points and 4.3 rebounds since joining Memphis. Were going to get it right, forward Zach Randolph said. Its a good thing, trying to figure out the chemistry with Jeff.Memphis improved to 33-12 after a 109-90 win at Dallas on Tuesday night, good for second in the Western Conference. Green, a 6-foot-9 player in his seventh season out of Georgetown, gives the Grizzlies a much-needed scorer as they try to reach the Western Finals for the second time in three years.Green can slash to the basket and provide another alternative to the front-line bulk of Randolph and centre Marc Gasol, an All-Star starter. Green can shoot from outside, helping ease the pressure on guards Mike Conley and Courtney Lee.Memphis coach Dave Joerger said theres a lack of practice time to implement plays designed for Green, so the Grizzlies are bringing back some plays they used when Rudy Gay played small forward.Hes just trying find himself on when he can attack, Joerger said of Green. And were trying to create lanes for him to attack where he knows theres not going to be a big in front of him.But adding a new player in the middle of the season means changes for players and reserves who helped the Grizzlies turn in the best start in franchise history. Green has played at least 26 minutes and up to 32 minutes so far.Defensive stalwart Tony Allen, who is dealing with an ankle injury, missed a start as did Lee, who scored in double figures in five straight games before Green replaced him in the starting lineup Jan. 21. That left reserve forward Jon Leuer out of the rotation temporarily, but his minutes have increased in recent games.Green said hes still is adapting, but remains confident hell blend with the team as one of several offensive options for the Grizzlies. Thats a switch from his tenure in Boston, where he was a primary focus of defences. You get comfortable with repetition and time, Green said. Its been great having Marc and Zach looking for me on cuts. The lane has been there for me, Ive just got to be aggressive. The Grizzlies have 27 games left in the regular season, starting Thursday night when Denver visits Memphis, to figure out the best combinations. You want to find something that everybody is comfortable with, Conley said. Were going to experiment and see what works. Well see as the games go on, and hopefully well figure it out sooner than later. Vapormax Plus Clearance . The 29-year-old has 20 goals and 41 points in 56 games this season, his first with Tampa Bay.CINCINNATI, Ohio -- David Price wished he had one pitch back. The left-hander took a shutout into the ninth inning Friday night before giving up a homer to Joey Votto, and the Tampa Bay Rays wound up holding on for a 2-1 victory over the Reds, their first in Cincinnati. The teams have a brief and lopsided interleague history. The Reds had won eight of their nine previous games, with Tampa Bays only win coming at Tropicana Field on June 28, 2011, on Evan Longorias game-ending homer. This one had all the drama at the end. "Never had a doubt," Price said. Longoria singled home a run in the first inning and Matt Joyce connected in the third against Johnny Cueto (0-2) as the Rays finally got a victory in their second visit to Great American Ball Park. They also visited in 2005 and got swept while giving up 34 runs in three games. Price (2-0) allowed four hits and one walk, losing his shutout when Votto hit an opposite-field drive with one out. He left a pitch over the outside part of the plate, costing him a chance at his third career shutout. "That stinks," said Price, who threw 114 pitches. "I definitely wanted to finish that game." Grant Balfour relieved, got Ryan Ludwick on a called third strike, then walked the next two batters and threw a wild pitch that let them advance to second and third. He pitched around Devin Mesoraco, who has been hitting well since his return from the disabled list, and got pinch-hitter Brayan Pena to take a called third strike. "He (Mesoraco) is hot right now and Im going to be smart," said Balfour, who is 3 for 3 in save chances. "I played the odds and rolled the dice there." Despite the teams limited history, they have one close connection. First-year Reds manager Bryan Price pitched for Joe Maddon when the Rays manager ran the Double-A Midland Angels in the 1980s. Price joked before the game that they gott to know each other during Maddons trips to the mound in the third and fourth innings to replace him. Jordan 1 Bred Cheap. No early exits in this one. Both starters hung in there against struggling offences. Tampa Bay has scored a total of eight runs in its last five games. The Reds have scored only 28 runs overall, the second-fewest in the National League. Both were wasteful again. Cueto needed 26 pitches to get through the first inning, when he walked two with only one out. Longoria singled home a run, but thats all the Rays could manage. Joyce led off the third inning with a homer that landed way up in the right-field seats for his team-high second of the season. "In the first inning, I didnt feel like I was ready," Cueto said. "I felt slow. I was a little down on myself. After that, everything clicked in and I was all right." Tampa Bay had chances for a lot more. The Rays stranded four runners in scoring position in the first five innings against Cueto, who gave up five hits and walked four over seven innings. The Reds wasted leadoff doubles by Mesoraco in the third and Brandon Phillips in the fourth. Phillips had two of Cincinnatis hits off Price. Brooks Koepka, who earned his European Tour card last year by winning three times on the Challenge Tour, made seven birdies against no bogeys for a 65 that left him one shot behind McIlroy going into the weekend. Woods, meanwhile, hit only four fairways and had to rely on some key putts to salvage a 73. He was in a tie for 44th, eight shots out of the lead. McIlroy was at 11-under 133. He appeared to be in control at Emirates Golf Club, leading by three shots after his birdie at No. 10. But he drove wildly into the waste area on the par-5 13th and the par-4 16th holes, both leading to bogeys, before recovering on the 18th. "It was nice to birdie the last and at least give myself a one-shot lead going into tomorrow," McIlroy said. "I will just go back tonight and sort of regroup and realize I am still leading the tournament. I was more frustrated on the back nine, as the back nine is where you want to build your score after playing the harder front nine." Danny Willett of England, who began his week by jumping out of a plane at 4,000 metres (13,000 feet), had a 65 and shared third place with Damien McGrane of Ireland (70) and Julien Quesne of France (70). Henrik Stenson, who won the Race to Dubai and the FedEx Cup last year, had a 67 and was four shots behind. Woods, trying to join Ernie Els as the only three-time winners of the Dubai Desert Classic, opened with a birdie on his third hole and the highlights were few after that. His only other birdie was on the par-3 11th, with a shot into 2 feet. Instead of going to the practice range after his round, he conducted a clinic with Mark OMeara. "I was on so many parts of the golf course today that I got to meet so many people, signed so many autographs out there and gave a lot of balls away," Woods joked with the crowd. "Seriously, I was justt hitting it sideways. What is the best site to buy team jerseys from China. " He even joked about the 79 he shot last week at Torrey Pines to miss the 54-hole cut on a course where he had won eight times previously, including a U.S. Open. "I have to tell everyone here I never made a 10-footer for not shooting 80," Woods said. As for his round on Friday, he said he putted well, but had too many putts from 40 and 50 feet, which is "not exactly the best thing." "I just didnt hit it close enough and didnt hit it well," Woods said. "I struggled with it and had a bad warm-up, as well. Just one of those days." Koepka is in his first full season on the European Tour. He came close to winning the Frys.com Open last autumn in America before struggling on the back nine. He is roommates in Florida with another American on the European Tour, Peter Uihlein, who bogeyed his last hole to miss the cut. "Winning is winning," said Koepka, who has four Challenge Tour wins. "Ive been able to do it on the Challenge Tour, so hopefully I can get it done with week." It should be more difficult with McIlroy, a two-time major champion, starting to regain his form. McIlroy ended a year without winning in December when he edged Adam Scott at the Australian Open. He finished one shot behind in Abu Dhabi two weeks ago. "Im leading the golf tournament. Ive been in this position before and Ive went on to win," McIlroy said. "Ive led from the front quite well in tournaments that I have won. I feel like I am still playing well and I know the course just as well as anyone else. Im now expecting to go out there and shoot two good scores over the weekend and hopefully lift the trophy." Willett, along with his wife and caddie, began the week with an assisted sky dive on Monday in a charity event. He feels it might have helped with his golf. "If you stand on the first tee, trying to hit a drive into the fairway seemed a little bit less nerve-racking than jumping out of a plane at 13,000 feet," Willett said. "You never know, might have prepared us quite well." ' ' '

ST. Paul Martin Jersey . PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Texas Rangers took an 8-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays in their first road game of the season Friday night, and it was an especially bad night for first baseman Prince Fielder and pitcher Joe Saunders. "It was just one of those days," said Fielder, who had one of the Rangers three errors and a base-running mistake that took Texas out of a possible big inning. "Everyone played hard, we made mistakes here and there. It just didnt go our way. Its nothing that you cant really see. Weve just got to come back tomorrow and fix it." Saunders (0-1) left in the fourth inning with a bruised left ankle after getting hit by Evan Longorias liner. Saunders gave up five runs and six hits, including a three-run home run to Sean Rodriguez, in 3 2-3 innings. "I think I was trying to be too fine early in the game," Saunders said. "The pitch to Rodriguez was a decent pitch; he just put a good swing on it. Probably the wrong pitch at the wrong time." Rodriguez tied a career-high with four RBIs and Jake Odorizzi got his first major league win for the Rays (3-2). Rodriguez was back in the lineup after missing Thursday nights 7-2 win over Toronto for the birth of his son. Odorizzi (1-0) allowed three hits in six innings in his seventh big league start and 10th game overall. Ryan Hanigan hit a three-run homer during the fifth for the Rays. Fielder got his first RBI since Sept. 22, a drought of 20 regular and post-season games, with a run-scoring single in the eighth. But the Rangers (2-2) wasted a great scoring opportunity in the fourth, when they were down 4-0. With runners on first and second and one out, Mitch Moreland singled into the right-field corner, but Fielder got tagged out in a rundown between third and home. "Prince just blew it. He just messed up. Thats all you can say about it," said manager Ron Washington. "I just didnt get a good jump," Fielder said. "It was my fault." The inning ended when Donnie Murphy struck out. Elvis Andrus and Adrian Beltre committed the other Rangers errors. "It was obvious during training that every time we made a mistake it cost us," Washington said. "We certainly have to tighten down our defence. We dont have a pitching staff that strikes people out right now and we certainly cant have them getting four outs an inning. So that certainly has to get better, and it will." Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon won his first replay reversal in the seventh after it was first ruled that right fielder Wil Myers didnt make the catch while sliding forward on J.P. Arencibias two-out flare. After a 1-minute, 43-second delay, the umpires changed the call to an out. Notes: Texas RHP Nick Martinez will make his major league debut in Saturday nights game against the Rays. "Go out there and relax, and use his pitches," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "Get us as many outs as you can. Be out there as long as you can. Believing in himself, believing in the stuff he has, and using it." ... LHP David Price will start Saturday for the Rays. ... Rangers LHP Matt Harrison (back) will make his next minor league start Tuesday. He went two innings in a rain-shortened outing Thursday for Double-A Frisco. ... Tampa Bay sent RHP Juan Carlos Oviedo (elbow ligament replacement surgery) to Triple-A Durham on a rehab assignment. Pittsburgh Penguins Pro Shop . Onyshko, from Minnedosa, Man., will compete in artistic gymnastics while Hanet, from Kelowna, B.C., will compete in lawn bowling as a para-athlete. "It is exciting that our Canadian athletes are starting to arrive at the Games Village," said Chantal Petitclerc, Canadas Chef de Mission.CALGARY -- It was an Olympic heroes welcome for the unlikeliest of heroes at Calgary International Airport Tuesday. Gilmore Junio stepped aside to let Denny Morrison race the 1,000 metres at the Winter Olympics in Sochi and watched his teammate deliver a silver for Canadas first speedskating medal in Sochi and follow that up with a bronze in the 1,500. But the homecoming in Calgary was all about Junio. One sign read "Gilmore for PM" while another said "Gilmore Junio won gold in the hearts of Canada". "Im pretty surprised and it definitely caught me off guard," said a beaming Junio with Morrison at his side. "When we made the decision within our team it was just such an easy decision to let him skate because he was skating so well. "This was really pleasant surprise. You see this on TV for the hockey players and stuff like that and I never thought Id be walking into one these. Its all because of him," he said with a nod to Morrison. "He makes me look good so Ill ride his coattails for a bit." Morrison, with his silver and bronze medals hanging around his neck, added to Junios accolades. "Its pretty neat how much attention this has gotten and this guy is one of the greatest guys in the world," he said. "He does things like this all the time and this is just another one of those things that Gilmore would do. Johan Hedberg Jersey. " Junios parents, Gino and Julie, were taken aback by the attention. "Actually we were just thinking to wait outside in the cell parking lot and I had texted him when youre done, text me and Ill pick you up," Gino said with a laugh. "We didnt really expect this. We were overwhelmed with the signs of support for him. This is amazing." Kelly Murray travelled from Red Deer, Alta., to show off her "Gilbert for PM" sign. "Its because what he did for the country was pretty special. Theres not a lot of people who would do that," she said. "He must have put the country first ahead of his own ambitions." Junio still has his ambitions and refused a request from a photographer to reach over and touch Morrisons silver medal. "Ive said I wont touch Dennys medal until Ive got my own. Thats kind of a hockey player mentality where you dont touch the Stanley Cup until you get it," he said. "But from what Ive seen it looks pretty good." Morrison is hoping to share in a future medal ceremony with his teammate. "If it all works out to the very best therell be a team sprint event in 2018 and we can be on the same team and win together that way." ' ' '
